So Danielle Smith is proposing an Alberta Government owned oil pipeline to the BC coast.
Technically this is "provincialization", but it's the same concept as nationalization: government owned common infrastructure. I think this is a big topic that Canada needs to discuss. The Norwegians nationalized their O&G decades ago. As a result, it funded their massive sovereign wealth funds and pays almost 1/3 of their gov's revenues today. Canada can benefit from some aspects of this.
Of course, the trade-off is, government usually sucks at everything they do.
So Smith's move brings a lot of contentious angles together.
She just front ran Canada on nationalizing a pipeline. Instead of Canada benefitting, Alberta does, literally putting AB in front of Canada. This is astute. However peak oil has passed, so not so fast.
Regardless, the discussion of nationalization of certain Canadian sectors needs a place to play itself out. So here you go.
