Land shortage, yet I still see the following:
- Sod farms
- Grain crops
- Dairy farms
- Silage crops
The Lower Mainland is virtually the only place in Canada that fruits, berries, and vegetables can be grown year-round, without the need for hot-houses. Yet this very finite land is being wasted on low value crops like above. I've counted many sod farms, just seed new lawns directly. Barley crops? Barley is plentiful in the prairies.
Banning dairy, grain, silage, sod crops in this area would force these producers to relocate, allowing an expansion of the fruit & veg market in this area. This scarce land would get used more efficiently and Canada's food supply would be stronger. This would also free up development land lowering land costs for housing.
It's a unique area, sandwiched between mountains and ocean with a favorable climate. So it needs unique solutions.
