America has been sizing Canada up for an invasion, since Canada became a country. The CIA always has arrived at the same conclusion- it's not worth it. The wars America has been involved in, for the past 60 years (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc), have all led to insurgencies and guerrilla warfare, which bleeds to US.
The big difference between Canada and these countries, is geography. Canada shares the World's largest border with the US. We also have an educated, technologically advanced, and first World country. It would take the population no time at all, to create stiff resistance, that could not be contained, due to the vast land and relatively spare population in the border areas, especially in Western Canada.
America can defeat Canada in a conventional war in a month. However, that would be the easy part. The impossible mission, would be to take over our natural resources, and make us second class citizens. Even if only 1% of Canadians decided to take an active role in the resistance, America would be screwed. It would be extremely east to cross the border, and conduct hit-and-run tactics against strategic infrastructure.
It would be Russia-Ukraine on steroids, and both countries would be destroyed.
