Henry Ford and almost all capitalists believed until very recently that they needed the masses of consumers in order to profit. Now they don't think they need people like us to make money. Or at least, they don't think we need to be that prosperous.

They also care less and less about the societal climate (crime, tensions, civility, stability, etc.) because they have enough wealth to isolate themselves from the nastiness. And tech makes that isolation easier and more effective than ever.

We're kind of witnessing this in real estate: landlords generally don't care how their tenants have to live, the only thing that matters is to get the highest rent possible. (Which, when you think of it, is perfectly normal capitalism...)

Yep. Henry Ford couldn't easily base his intellectual property in Liechtenstein back then, or even if he did, there would still be no way to escape paying a bunch of taxes in Michigan and the USA (where the operations are actually taking place).

Until very recently there were quite a few "checks" in place that helped ensure that the very wealthy still felt like they had a stake in society and its future. These have been slowly but surely whittled away gradually in recent years.

Also, I was going to say yesterday that for the first time, a MapleCivvy thread was more active than its SSP counterpart, but it ceased to be true since then, the AI thread over there saw a bunch of interesting posts (there are still some high-quality participants on SSP, despite the staff’s best efforts.)

The gap is quickly narrowing though. 🙂

Just got an ad for an app that listens to your meetings and immediately outputs a condensed version, “your personal notes” from the meeting, so you can send that to your boss and colleagues, and impress them…

Of course, if I were the boss, I’d respond with “okay, then tell me why I shouldn’t fire you and replace you with an AI, since it’s the AI that’s been listening to me in the meeting in the first place lol”

I'd be interested in a bit of brainstorming (pun not intended) among the handful of members of this forum (smart people, on average) regarding the best ways to invest in AI... one of my tech buddies recommended early investment in chip makers, years ago, and the tiny amount I risked on that proved a really good bet. Would be nice to be able to repeat that kind of "deal"...
