Fair point. Your alignment makes sense. It reminds me of the Wilkes-Jubilee connector I posted on Stroadz, although designing a road near the Jubilee overpass could pose challenges. Navigating through the neighborhood along Oakenwald might be feasible, and the Fermor-Oakenwald bridge would be the simplest option. But I can see how school zones in that area could trigger opposition.
My proposed Wilkes-Fermor connector has a few advantages:
- It bypasses school zones, minimizing local pushback
- Its angle lends itself more naturally to connecting Wilkes with Pembina and Fermor. Also it would be easier for Westbound traffic wishing to head onto McGillivray have less distance to drive South on Pembina.
Your plan does well in minimizing land expropriation, though expanding Jubilee might be cheaper. The road is probably too developed for that to be viable, and the neighborhood opposition could be fierce. It's kind of a trolley problem, really.
Personally, I think strengthening the Sterling Lyon connection is more of a priority. It feels disconnected from Pembina Highway and could benefit from greater integration. Taylor Ave is too built-up for meaningful upgrades. Ultimately, this kind of project could kick-start redevelopment and unlock the potential of our rapid transit system through some solid transit-oriented development.
