Convert St Matthews, Ellice, and Sargent to one-ways. Reopen Wellington by garbage hill.

It's a patch, but would provide a major relief valve for cross town traffic.

That's not such a bad idea. It's kind of a shame they didn't plan St Matthews well to have an expressway standard. I would say yes to turning St Matthews and Ellice pair into one way streets. Sargent and Wellington I'm not so sure.

Ya thought the same. Then I thought maybe a 3 and 1 lane setup. But reversible lanes would also be a great fit here.

Get 6 lanes into downtown in the morning, and 6 lanes out in the evening. Best of both worlds.

Hopefully at least something can be done to St Matthews Ave to improve traffic, whether that's turning St Matthews and Ellice into one way pairs, or linking it with Broadway.

But like we discussed in the Winnipeg Transit page, upgrades to Portage Ave would be helpful to imrpoving traffic flow. Since there are 4 lanes per direction in the widest areas, lots can be done to it.

Removing street parking and converting it to transit use is a first step.
Either a BRT way could be built in the middle of the road in a similar fashion to the Pie IX Busway in Montreal. Or, The outer lanes could become segregated Bus Lanes which would be easier to construct and help serve local businesses. Maybe both could be done and help improve transit.
Also too, removing many unnecessary traffic lights would play a big role in fixing Portage Ave. But this would be pretty tough considering this road is built up with decades worth of apartments, businesses, etc. Removing many access points where there aren't traffic lights and just having RIRO Intersections would be logical.
And at traffic lights, they should add u-turn signals for those wishing to visit a business on the other side of the road, making up for the removal of the access points.

Also, now that a Costco is being built at Headingley, I kinda what's going to happen with out infrastructure?

I have a feeling that area will be a Zoo similar to Route 90. Highway 1 is already a critical transportation route with tons of traffic, and adding all those businesses there will make Portage Ave West of the Perimeter even more of a choke point than it already is. That area has been booming over the years. Within the past 20 years many businesses have popped up. Some hotels appeared (including the Motel 6, Best Western Plus), Car Dealerships, Pilot/Denny's, and multiple apartment complexes have been built lately. Headingley itself has been booming as a community.

I'm sure the Perimeter Cloverleaf at Portage will eventually be upgraded to a Parclo or Diverging Diamond.

But hopefully that would encourage the government to consider building the Headingley Bypass. This time we'd have a logical reason to actually build it, not just as a trophy LOL.

I see here at the Granduer Homes enterance in Headingley, I notice there used to be a traffic light there in 2007. I'm kinda curious what was there for a traffic light to exist. That road pretty much goes nowhere.

Edit, I see now. There was a Drive In Movie Theatre. I thought there would've been a Sports field or something there. Drive in theatres are fading away nowadays, and I want to go to one someday.

Almey Ave access to Focus Hyundai and SCU should be converted into either a RIRO Intersection or a partial segregated T-intersection. Traffic wishing to go onto SB Lag from EB Almey would head to the cloverleaf at Concordia.

The partial T-intersection could use an on-demand traffic signal that would start operation 2 hours before the SCU and Focus Hyundai open and turn off 2 hours after they close. Sundays the signals would turn off completely as the businesses are closed. The intersection would be treated like a normal intersection and to go when it's safe to do so.

I saw the post on Stroadz of converting Wellington Ave to a free-er flowing roadway. Personally I think it would be a little hard since Wellington Ave is too developed for it to work, especially with hotels and industries along the road, and King Edward too.

This plan is similar to my previous airport area improvements and freeway sketch. But this version turns Century Street (and the businesses on the East Side) into a full freeway. And with the crosstown freeway or a connection to the McPhillips Bypass, I decided to connect it to Wellington Ave rather than cutting through the industries around Notre Dame and Saskatchewan Ave. And having a better expressway connection to the Airport could work well.

As for King Edward, it would be converted to a two-way street with bike lanes and a median. It would help improve access to businesses and hotels alongside the route.

And the Blue Rings represent a full interchange (SPUI most likely), Red represents a half diamond Interchange, and the black lines are flyover underpasses. I also marked where there would be traffic lights.

This is how I'd ultimately like Lag and Reendeers to look. This design is an interchange similar to the Yellowhead Trail in Edmonton. It is a tight diamond/ SPUI combo with a U-turn lane. It also has a Frontage Road connecting to the SCU and Focus Hyundai. The interchange would be a bit of a challenge as it would require 4 different signal phases: Straight Traffic onto the Frontage Roads, Straight Traffic and U-turning traffic, Turning onto Lag, and Turning onto Reendeers.

Same could even be done at Kenaston and Sterling Lyon near IKEA.

Exactly. And do Regent while you're at it.

That achieves a 4.5km stretch of light-free traffic. Huge results for only 2 overpasses. Add in the Dugald/Marion combo and you're 6km light-free. Creating a virtual time-warp from Maginot to Grassie.

These are way higher priority than that Marion cluster-fuck they're wasting $100 million on.

I drew this for Lag @ Regent a while back. I'd somehow have to draw up a way to prevent weaving.

This could work too, but would require more land expropriation. But with linking it to frontage roads it could work well.

Don't worry about "weaving".

It's a fictitious problem invented by road designers who've lost the plot. The same road designers who will say "no cloverleafs, because they weave", will also say "turning circles everywhere". Even though turning circles are 100% weaving for all cars that pass through them. Not just the ones turning (fraction of total traffic). And turning circle weaving is at far more perpendicular angle than clovers. /Rant

But ya, SPUI at Regent, tight diamond or SPUI at Reenders and she's solved like butter. Great work man.👏

Do this and turn Warman road into a RIRO.

But if the city would just connect Dugald and Marion, they'd just need a Parclo at Dugald. This design would cost more in the long run.

Note: The frontage roads would be at grade at the railway crossing

I did a little bit of drawing for Abinoji Mikanah and I decided that maybe slightly realigning the road could help make space to reduce the amount of traffic lights between St Annes and Lagimodiere from 4 to 2. It would require realigning of the drainage and power lines for this to work.

Or, maybe just turn De La Seigneurie to a RIRO and have Lakewood/ Island Shore Blvd Connect. Shorehill Road could be connected to Beaverhill and have one Intersection. Likely this would be done if anything to make Lag free-er flowing.

This here doesn't have to be done, but here are some ideas for some possible Intersections to make the Suburban areas feel more connected and enhance access to public transit. Lots of Youtube Urbanism Enthusiasts tend to critique suburbs for having lack of connection with public transit and other neighbourhoods. I find they're overhated in that manner, but still I think that some connection is needed too. Especially if Winnipeg wants to improve its bus system, I feel like more access to transit is needed. Most of these could simply become flyovers in the future, like De La Seigneurie. Island Shore and Shorehill could eventually get simple diamond Interchanges. And some of these would highly likely not get done as it would knock down a few houses in the process.

Retrospectively, I would've done this at Lagimodiere and Sage Creek Blvd. This way it could take away some stress from the De La Seigneurie Blvd and Abinoji Intersection. This could also enhance public transit connection in this area with the other neighbourhoods.

Both Bishop ideas are helpful but actually add lights. A turbo T would go from 3 lights to 1.5 lights with very minimal modifications.

The RIRO makes sense given how close it would be to a Lag/Bishop interchange. Good work man.

Yeah, maybe having Turbo T intersections at Shorehill, Lakewood, and Island Shore would be helpful and speed up traffic, along with a RIRO at De La Seigneurie. But the cons of a Turbo T would be that the traffic would have to rapidly merge into the left lane and get into the Right lane swiftly if they wanted to turn onto Lakewood from Island Shore. Therefore traffic may have to be slowed down to 70 in those areas.

Personally, Just reducing the amount of Intersections to two by making a RIRO at DLS and making Shorehill into a 4-Way Intersection and combining Lakewood/ Island Shore to a 4-way Intersection would be my safest. Or maybe even Shorehill could just stay as is. It would improve safety as there would be less lights to stop at and longer distances between Intersections. The cons are that it would add extra signal phases if it's 4-way Intersections. Just having 1 full intersection at Lakewood/ Island Shore and a Turbo T at Shorehill would make the route much safer.

And although this would create some controversy, but the De La Seigneurie and Sage Creek BLVD connection could happen. But like I said, it could create opposition from residents. But hopefully the houses could be moved elsewhere rather than expropriated.

I also think that converting the Lag and Abinoji Intersection to a 3-level Diamond could be really helpful. It could turn the Intersections of Capston Road, Burmac Road, De La Seigneurie Blvd and Des Hivernants Blvd to RIRO Intersections. The Sage Creek Blvd/ De La Seigneurie Gate would still be needed because of the shopping center, but it could possibly be converted to a SPUI In the future, along with Warde Ave.
